Dialogue in the City Docks - Portuguese Artists at Work
Between 4th & 19th July 2003 Dialogue presented the work of 13 artists from Britain, Oporto and Hanover at various locations around the city docks, which were viewed from specially hosted ferries that escorted audiences around the floating harbour.
Two artists from Oporto were included, Gabriela Vaz Pinheiro and Ana Medeira, due to support from The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Bristol-Oporto Foundation. Both works brought an element of Oporto to Bristol - Gabriela showed a projection of a familiar busker seen in Oporto and Ana made parallel mappings anchored by the serving of 'francesinha" at Bristol Cafes--see photo.
The busker film, SOLO, shown in the window of the Watershed, was silent and the audience was asked to contribute £1 to purchase the audio CD of the music. This money will be sent back to Oporto for the busker, who had a yearning to play abroad but is unlikely to do so. Although the exhibition is now over, if anyone would like a copy please contact Carolyn on 01454 281768.
Ana's work was multi-part, consisting of flyposting along a mirror route to that of Oporto, between Watershed and the Brunel buttery. The Watershed sold many francesinha during this period. A video of the Oporto journey was also shown in the Watershed on monitors.
The Independent Artists Network are pleased to have created links with Oporto artists and hope to work with them again in the future. The cultural exchange and debate between the artists was as valid as the production of these works.
