Enthusiastic Lawrence Weston children excel
Children from Bank Leaze Primary School in Lawrence Weston rose to the NatWest challenge with a splendid display at the school in July, including stories, myths, paintings and historic references from Portugal. And if that was not enough they welcomed their guests with a hearty Portuguese greeting and--yes wait for it--a massive box full of corks for re-cycling. Congratulations children.
Among the authors, Rebecca Meehan wrote about the eating habits of the Portuguese with particular emphasis on Bacalhau (salted cod), Daniel Raby concentrated on port wine and told the story of why the people of Porto are called Tripeiros and Chantelle Johnson told of the Gallos de Barcelos. Artist Lee Seager showed that he had mastered the Portuguese language and painted a ship leaving Porto with port wine for Bristol and Emma Smart depicted the wide array of fresh foods available in local shops (both pictured). There were others too numerous to mention. Headteacher Ian Ramsbottom told of how the children had benefitted from their work and teacher Maureen Gillet appeared to have had as much fun as the children. She expressed particular thanks to BOA member Maria Hole who taught the children Portuguese and to Liz Gamlin for arranging the programme. Thank you also to NatWest and Kate Greenwood, their Area Quality Manager, who presented the cheque. This, the fifth year of the BOF NatWest Education award, has been another outstanding success.
