BOA 20 Years On
The 11th April 2004 will be the 20th anniversary of the signing of the
twinning charters between Bristol and Oporto. So it's time to celebrate.

A tremendous programme is building up. In Diario 54 we suggested a programme of perhaps 15 events but the current list is of 26 items, embracing art, film, photography, literature, drumming, Portuguese African music, Harbourside events, maritime and educational scholarships etc. There will be school based activities and gastronomical opportunities for people of all ages.
One key decision is to spread the events over a year starting this Autumn. The highlight, we hope, will be a visit from the Mayor of Porto, Ver. Rui Rio, in April. A special Council meeting is planned and some key events will be built around his visit.

Sarah Kent is arranging for BOA to present a number of books to the Twinning Section of the Bristol Central Library which will help raise public awareness of the Oporto twinning. The Rough Guide to Portugal and the pocket-sized Portugal, A Traveller's History are among the titles already selected. Also on the shopping list are likely to be books on the port wine trade and on the city of Porto and surrounding area, including the Douro Valley. It is intended to take advantage of BOA's forthcoming visit to Oporto to scout around the city's bookshops for suitable publications.

If members can recommend books they would like to see included, suggestions would be very welcome. Please email Sarah Kent at oportobooks@lawsonkent.co.uk or write or phone Sarah -- address on back page.
If you have any more suggestions send your ideas to Liz Gamlin, .

Did You Know …?

While Bristol has seven twinnings, Oporto has no less than sixteen! These are: Liège (Belgium), Ndola (Zambia), Nagasaki (Japan), Bordeaux (France), Recife (Brazil), Jena (Germany), Vigo, Leon and Duruelo de la Sierra (Spain), Neves (São Tomé), Beira (Mozambique), Mindela (Cape Verde islands), Shanghai and Macau (China), and Luanda (Angola).

Books in the Central Library
The Bristol International Twinnings Association has collaborated with Bristol Central Library to bring together a collection of books and magazines dedicated to our twin cities. Portuguese flags and images were part of an exhibition which was opened by the Lord Mayor, Cllr Bill Martin, on July 31st. The Bristol Oporto Association donated a range of books to the collection. Thus library visitors will be able to access more information on all our twin cities, Oporto in particular. The launch received good local press and radio coverage. The books are located on the ground floor in the lending library.
