St. Michael's Hill, Bristol The Council House and College Green at the bottom of Park Street

Esturiales was founded in 1990 by the representatives of six major European estuaries, those of the Severn and Wear in the UK, the Douro and Tagus in Portugal and the Gironde and the Loire in France. The founders recognised the need to limit the decline of estuaries whilst recognising their essential need to sustain economic activities.

Miguel Boieiro (left) from Lisbon was elected President of Esturiales at its AGM held in Bristol in November 1999.

Joint studies are undertaken to establish the measures needed to preserve the ecological and economic future of the estuarine communities. Bristol is represented by Cllr Charles Price, South Gloucestershire by Cllr Peter Tyzack and the all important Douro by Manuel Seabra, Presidente da Câmara de Matosinhos.

So much for the serious bit. On to other matters. Charlie Price told Diário that the reason Bristol is plagued with seagulls is because the authorities in Lisbon got so fed up with these gregarious birds on the Tagus that they sent them over to us. They were ex-communicated, given a map of Bristol and a bag of fish scraps for the journey and told to try their luck on the Severn, the south shore in particular. Any observations to Cllr Price please.
