Building bridges between Bristol and Oporto on a broad front and
encouraging the whole community to embrace the culture, people and
language of the Portuguese speaking world.

Bristol and Oporto were "twinned" in 1984 and share many characteristics. They are of similar size and are both Atlantic ports, significant centres of manufacture and regional capitals.
The BRISTOL OPORTO ASSOCIATION welcomes everyone interested in Oporto and the Portuguese people, language and culture world wide. Diario, our quarterly newsletter, is full of information on things Portuguese and outlines a range of events in the Bristol area, typically:

+ Portuguese film, theatre, art, jazz, folk music, fado,
+ wine tastings, dinners, outdoor events,
+ celebrations of Dia de Portugal and Sao Joao,
+ welcome events for visiting groups from Oporto,
+ and the not to be missed group visits to Oporto.

Magnificent Porto, the medieval town tiering down to the river Douro, spectacular overhead bridges, "barco rabellos" moored alongside the port wine lodges, fish restaurants, olives and almonds for sale, hints of Brazil and Mozambique.
Surrounding the old town is a large manufacturing city, beautiful Atlantic beaches and the home of former European Champions FC Porto.

Greater Oporto has a population of more than a million inhabitants and is Portugal's second city

In addition to members' events, visits and exchanges, the ASSOCIATION
encourages projects initiated by school, youth and special interest groups.
